1998 was nearing the end of the dominance of the VHS format with the DVD overtaking tape sales by the early 2000s. The so-called format wars were almost over with Sony's Betamax format ending production at about this same time. The VHS format did not die out quickly because of its recording function, so many homes were adding a DVD player rather than replacing their VCRs. 1998 was a boom time for the brick and mortar video rental industry.
